SPECIFIC DETAILS

Price is for both professionally tanned fur casings. This pair of Canadian Ermine are of summer pelt quality. The difference between summer and winter ermine fur is the color. Summer is off-white w/brown tail and winter is snow white w/black tail. The weight and thickness of the underfur in the winter is also much thicker. This is also determined by geographical habitat areas. These two fur pelts are very soft and supple. Summer Ermine pelts are often used for Native American Head Dress or Ceremonial Regalia. They are also used to make many different accessories for multi-purpose uses. Some prefer the lighter weight for crafting because it is thinner and easier to work with. The first one measures 11" Nose to base of tail. It is a total of 14" from nose to end of tail. It averages 1-1/2" to 2" in width. The second measures 11-1/2" to the base of tail and it is 15" from nose to end of tail. It averages 1-1/2" to 1-3/4" in width. This is a male and female pair. I chose to pair these two because of their similarities in color, texture, cut and length. Also to ensure a person would have as close to a matching pair as possible for their various crafting needs particularly for headdress's. The male of the two is just a bit heavier in thickness and the tail is a bit rougher. These tiny tails are very hard to split and sometimes small nicks are taken out of the fur. It isn't highly noticeable. As you can see by the photographs, some of the summer guard hairs are missing. Look like tiny bits of hair missing. It is only the longer brown guard hairs missing. This is simply because they are thinner and much easier to get scuffed in the vast array of habitat that they travel in. They are also quite playful and do quite a bit of play fighting and bighting on each other in the spring. Small guard hairs are often torn off in this process.  If you have any additional questions about these fur pieces, please feel free to ask.

Interesting Facts on this Fur

The ermine and the weasel are often confused, although Fur authorities agree that the ermine has a finer grade Fur. This is due to the fact that ermine, an original inhabitant of Siberia, has had to grow a much thicker coating to protect itself from the intense cold. This density of Fur is about the only difference between the Russian ermine and the North American weasel in winter dress. Again the tail tells a tale, for the weasel’s tail is predominantly white with a black tip, while the ermine’s tail is more black than white in the winter dress. A good American weasel in white winter dress is a better buy than a poor Russian ermine which it so closely resembles. The Alaskan variety is the finest in America. Further south, weasels remain brown through the year, and their pelts are sometimes called "summer ermine."
